As someone who has helped thousands of people to lose weight I know that it’s affecting you much more than you realise, both physically and mentally.
Here’s how being overweight affects people’s lives, and what you can do about it.
Firstly, people who are overweight, even by a small amount, suffer from these:
- More likely to have depression
- More illnesses and health problems – Like infections, colds, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol
- Higher risk of diseases – Like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease
- Early death due to poor health
- Lower quality of life
- Lower self-esteem and confidence
- Stigma of being perceived as lazy or weak willed
- Lower energy levels
- Lower quality relationships with their partner, children, or grandchildren, due to all of the above
The good news is that you have the power to make a massive difference to your weight and therefore make a massive difference to your life.
You are in control, and the choices that you make today will determine your future, either positively or negatively.
Here are positive choices you can make right now to help you take full control of your weight and your life:
- Commit to regular exercise – This should be something that is both effective and that you enjoy. Then you can keep it up over the long term, lose weight, and keep the weight off
Many people find my Classes a massive help with this, both getting great results and enjoying their exercise
- Develop a healthy diet – Most people try all sorts of diets over their lifetime and end up where they started or even heavier. Diets are not effective for long term weight loss and well over 95% of people will fail when using a diet
It’s much better to develop a healthy diet that you enjoy and then, like with exercise, you can keep it up over the long term, lose weight, and keep the weight off
- Increase your motivation – Motivation is an area that everyone struggles with from time to time, some more than others
Without the right motivation you won’t make the necessary changes to your life with exercise and diet to lose weight, and so you and your life suffers. Motivation is much easier with the right help and support
- Get the right help and support – No one can achieve great or worthwhile things like losing weight without help. As this is your life and it’s massively important to you, it makes sense to get the best help and support you can

I hadn’t invested in looking after myself for a few years as I’d been “too busy” with work and family life.
I started with the circuit classes which had an enormous impact on my physical and mental health. After about a year I decided to join the running classes. I started at the beginning, running for 2 minutes. I completed the Great North Run (half marathon) in the summer.

I’ve been going to James’ sessions for the last 3½ years. It makes me feel good to know that I’m actually doing something very positive.
I would say that everybody is not competing against each other but working at their own level, and this is what we’re encouraged to do. Just do your best.

After turning 40 I put on a few pounds and my fitness was in decline. I do the two circuit classes and running class. The results are fantastic. I feel fitter than in my 30s and people have commented that I look much leaner.
I was out of breath after running less than five minutes. I’m amazed at my progress and can now do 10k in 48 minutes and half marathon in 1 hour 53 minutes.

I’d got to 50 something and I’m not fit. So I’d got a choice. I could have grown old disgracefully and eaten lots of chocolate and got fat. Or I could do something positive which is what I chose to do.
4 years later I’ve got various 5ks, 10ks, 5 mile, 10 mile races, and 3 half marathons under my belt.
If somebody had said to me 4 years ago that I would be running half marathons I would have laughed. But here I am. I am fitter now than I have ever been.

I joined the exercise classes 3 years ago this month. At that time I was obese and hadn’t ever really exercised regularly.
Since joining the classes I have lost a total of 4½ stones!! I no longer need medication for my blood pressure as it’s returned to normal! My asthma is also more stable than before. My life now is much different. I feel so much better.
